What are Grievance Proceedings For?

In essence, if you make a formal complaint to your employer, it would begin grievance proceedings. These processes enable workplace disputes to be dealt with efficiently and fairly. Employees have the right to raise a grievance at any time of their tenure and employers must follow a constructive grievance procedure to ensure fair treatment of all employees.

The Grievance Procedure

If raising a workplace dispute, you may be encouraged to resolve the matter internally before escalating it to HR. Should the grievance remain unresolved, the next processes would be as follows:

Raise a Formal Grievance

Write a letter detailing the issues and supply as much information as possible.

Gather Evidence

The employer will gather evidence and conduct a thorough investigation of the claims brought forward.

Grievance Hearing

An in-person hearing will be arranged allowing you to explain your grievance, provide evidence, and inform your employer of your desired outcome.

Outcome

The employer will send you a written decision, informing you of how they propose to resolve the grievance.

Appeal

Employees have a right to appeal the outcome if they are not satisfied with it.
